Patented! BMW Develops Active Aero Winglet on Superbike S 1000 RR

DRF.com – In the superbike class, many manufacturers embed a winglet on the left and right of the motorbike fairing which aims to increase downforce on the front. With this, when carried both straight and cornering, it will be more stable.

Active Aero Winglets BMW S 1000 RR

BMW seems to be developing an active winglet on its flagship superbike, the BMW S 1000 RR. This technology allows the winglets to remain parallel to the road when tilted. With it, it can increase better downforce in corners and can also increase grip on the front wheel.

Unfortunately, information regarding this technology is still incomplete and what the exact mechanism system is. It is estimated that this technology will be connected to the Six-Axis IMU system, where this system can function to measure the tilt angle of the motorbike while running.

BWM Patented Technology

The German manufacturer has patented the Active Aero Winglet technology. The winglet will be hinged and an actuator will be attached, so that it can move to adjust the tilt and maintain its position horizontally.

At the WSBK, what is interesting is that a regulation states that a WSBK homologated superbike can or is allowed to use active aero. As long as the mass production model sold also uses the same technology. This allows the BMW manufacturer to be the first to use this technology at the WSBK later.
